Ferrets

Hunting with Ferrets
The hunting of rabbits with ferrets has been reported throughout history, it was known in ancient Greece and more recently in medieval England (1390) a law was passed restricting the ownership of ferrets only to those with an income greater than forty shillings per year, in order to prevent the working classes from using them to poach rabbits, which were then highly regarded as meat providers.

Taking a look around!
The keeping of ferrets in the UK for hunting purposes was very widespread before and during the war, when a ferreted rabbit made a welcome addition to the family meat ration. The popularity of ferreting (the hunting with ferrets) declined rapidly with the introduction of myxamatosis and the massive drop in rabbit numbers. With the rabbit population again at a high level, ferreting is enjoying an increase in popularity, as is the keeping of ferrets as pets, the two activities being highly compatible.

Ferret Racing
Popular at many of our events, ferret racing is simple and contributes to the funds of local ferret clubs who look after abandoned and abused ferrets. The ferrets love it as they race down coloured tubes, with the winner being richly regarded with a tasty snack. Bet on a ferret and if you win you'll be richer. Bet on a looser and you'll be happy in the knowledge that you're helping the recovery of these friendly and misjudged creatures.

The Ferret Roadshow The Ferret Roadshow

The Ferret Roadshow presents:

entertaining and educational talks, illustrated with living animals;
the opportunity for the public to handle ferrets;
an on-going inter-active display;
informative static displays;
main- and/or side-ring events.

The objective of Ferret Roadshow displays is to educate visitors to the event, in a very entertaining manner. This is achieved by various methods, all of which combine talk with the opportunity to both see and actually handle the ferrets themselves. These inter-active displays are complimented by a static interpretative display of photographs, drawings and equipment.
